So, in a previous post, I talked about ‘The negative effects of worrying’ and it came to my mind afterwards that some people who read the blog might say “OK, I will stop worrying, then what do I do?” Or some others might say, “Oh it appears I can’t control it…; these thoughts still keep bugging my mind and filling my head with doubts, worry and anxiety, and I don’t seem to be able to stop worrying” I’m hoping to help you with this short blog that talks about the alternative I’ve found to worrying and how you can start living life to the full!
The first and most important alternative to worrying that I’ve found is getting the word about the situation and speaking it out – so you might ask what do I mean by the word? The bible is ‘the word’ to me! We should open the bible and get scriptures into us daily, then when we are faced with situations that would normally cause us to worry, these words come back up or even at that time we can search the scriptures and find a bible verse that addresses the situation and we can begin to think about this word and also say it out every time the situation pops up in our mind. The way the devil attacks us is by making several negative suggestions that go against the word of God in our mind and we really don’t have to think about these thoughts; we can replace them with thoughts that line up with the word of God. We can’t overcome thoughts with thoughts; we’ve got to get our mouths involved in this battle and replace the thoughts with words that come out of our mouth because that’s what will stop the thought. So let’s get back to the basics and get God’s word in us, not just reading it but actually thinking about it and striving to understand what we’re reading so that we know how to apply them appropriately when we are faced with situations. The more attention we give to the word, the more understanding we will get! Mark 4:24 (…The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given–and you will receive even more.)
The next alternative to worrying is Praying – I believe this is very simple and straightforward. We need to turn to God and talk to him in our own language about what is bothering us (just like we talk to a friend about these issues – God wants to reason with us Isaiah 1:18 “come now, let us reason together, says the Lord…”). Thereafter, we need to actually ask him in specific terms what we would desire Him to do for us. Phil 4:6 -8 says “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus”. Once we’ve asked God what we want in specific terms, then we need to fix our thoughts… (Verse 8 says “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honourable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise”. How do we do this? How do we fix our thoughts? By disciplining our mind to think a specific thought…this thought is ‘the word’ because ‘the word’ is truth anything else is a fact and it’s subject to change! After doing these, we will find that we can go about our day like He’s answered our prayers. The thoughts that “things have not changed and possibly maybe nothing will change” will come back to us but we should shut that devil up by speaking the word again and again; reminding him about the scriptures and telling him that you believe God is working and you will see things change! Tell Him God has conquered him and he’s fallen like lightning and we’ve been given the authority over him. Hallelujah!!! Don’t allow yourself to be worried or anxious about anything – it’s not worth your time and energy. Life is more precious than spending all of our today stressing about tomorrow; when each day comes with its own grace! Just relax, trust that God loves you so much and He will give you only the best, and then enjoy yourself to the maximum. “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me John 14:1.
The final alternative I will talk about on this blog is for you to do whatever is within your power to do. So after you’ve gotten the word and prayed then spend time to plan, prepare, seek counsel and start doing something to change the situation, even if it’s little – “Do your planning and prepare your fields before building your house” Proverbs 24:27. Remember Rome was not built in a day so it’s gradual – slowly but surely things are changing.
While you’re doing this, the devil will not take the back seat, he will come back again and again. Remember, when the thought to worry comes back to mind though, tell the devil and remind yourself that you are on your way and things are changing.
You can’t win your victories by keeping quiet – you have only what you say but when you don’t say anything, guess what? You have nothing! When you say negative things, guess what you’ll have? Indeed…negative things!! So why take the chances? Begin shaping your destiny and taking back control of your life by speaking only the words that line up with God’s word about you and your life. You are destined for victory! You were made for the top – a city set on the hill that cannot be hidden “You are the light of the world–like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. Matt 5:14”.
